The World of Dead Rising 3
This section will cover the scope of the world, characters, and setting. We’ll dive into the main character, the design and music, as well as touch on any available DLC and expansion packs for Dead Rising 3. Keep in mind that it is rated M for Mature and is not suited for audiences under the age of 17 years old. It’s packed full of gore, strong language, and sexual content.
Atmosphere and Location
Any Dead Rising fan knows what to expect from Capcom when they release a new game. Dead Rising 3 provides an even larger map for players to explore and battle hordes of zombies upon. The map boasts a size larger than Dead Rising and Dead Rising 2 combined. The game takes place in 2021, 10 years after Dead Rising 2 and 15 after the original Dead Rising. You’re attempting to survive in the made-up city of Los Perdidos, California.
The music is taken from a series of musicians and provides an eerie if not rocking vibe in which to slaughter zombies. The aesthetic, itself, is grim. As in any expectant zombie game, you have flaming buildings, cluttered streets, rundown offices and grocery stores, and a general feeling of ill-boding. Although Dead Rising 3 opts for a grimier feel to their latest installment, there still exists that treasured gameplay and atmosphere of the beloved games that came before it. Vehicles have become a key element to survive. Special attention has gone into the gore, and the story as well, developing a darker themed main story to guide players through the decimated city in an effort to survive and maintain their humanity.
Dead Rising 3 focuses on the character of Nick Ramos. He’s an orphaned mechanic who worked at Rhonda’s Wrench-O-Rama before the zombie outbreak. Players follow along with his story of desperate survival as he’s faced with not only the undead but with desperate living survivors trying to live just one day more. Nick doesn’t recall his childhood, but he does have a tattooed number 12 beside his ear, something that he has always remembered having. In the scope of the Dead Rising games, Nick is the youngest protagonist of the series and because of his age, he’s often naive initially.
Rhonda Dreske is the owner of Wrench-O-Rama and is Nick’s boss. Besides being a highly skilled mechanic, Rhonda has a black-and-white attitude about survival. Either one does what it is necessary to survive, or one simply dies. Despite this practical mode of thinking, she is warm and supportive towards Nick, often acting as a motherly or supportive role to him. Although she considers Nick her family, she does have an ex-husband somewhere in the city.
Annie is a young woman who is part of the “illegals.” An illegal is someone who has been infected by the zombie virus but has not been fitted with a specific microchip that targets her by authorities to ensure she receives a dose of Zombrex. For those who are unaware, Zombrex works as a temporary cure to stave-off the infection from spreading. Annie travels with other illegals, including her ex-boyfriend, Red, whom she sees as her family. She has a strong stance towards the government since she has seen them brutally handle the public as well as illegals. Her sense of justice is strong, particularly towards the illegals and government.
Similar to the previous Dead Rising games, Nick is a young man trying to survive the onslaught of hordes upon hordes of zombies. He has a crew of friends and allies to battle against the dead and desperate survivors alike. At one point, Nick gets bitten by a zombie and has to not only survive but find Zombrex within the decaying city to make sure he doesn’t turn. If that wasn’t enough, Nick learns through a friend that the government intends to bomb the city of Los Perdidos in an effort to eradicate the zombie threat. This pushes the protagonist and his allies to find a quick means of escape.
The story is introduced through missions which are given through chapters and initiated by speaking with people in-game. Besides the main story, there are additional side quests as well. The bulk of the missions revolve around trying to find Zombrex as well as discovering a means to leave the city. Attempts to reach a quarantine zone which is reportedly aiding in evacuations end in chaos when the zone is, in fact, abandoned save by a biker gang. It’s here that Nick kills his first living person and has to come to terms with the moral implications of that action.
When Nick hears about an airplane that can be fixed up and used to escape the city, the story revolves around fixing it up whilst trying to survive the continuous threat of zombies. Because the tunnels leading out of the city have all been collapsed, the airplane seems to be the only possible mode of escape. The story unfolds from there pitting Nick against decisions that shake his sense of morality. There are a total of five endings for Dead Rising 3, dependant upon story and side-quest completion and player choice.
DLC and Expansion Packs
There are four main DLC packs that include additional story content. Operation Broken Eagle has players follow the story of Adam Kane who is a military commander. His mission is to kill the president. It involves killing survivors and destroying safe zones.
Fallen Angel follows Angel Quijano an illegal who is trying to stop special forces from murdering innocent survivors.
Chaos Rising surrounds the story of Hunter Thibodeaux, a biker on a story of revenge.
The Last Agent is about a ZDC agent named Brad Park who is trying to determine the origin of the zombie outbreak.
A non-canon DLC that was offered as a Microsoft exclusive is Super Ultra Dead Rising 2 Arcade Remix, in which players can fight as the characters in a classic arcade style.
All the DLC packs are $9.99, so if you wish to expand the story, choose the first four for rich, worthy content.
While a step in a different direction for the Dead Rising series, Dead Rising 3 attempts to bring in a new audience while still presenting hours of gory entertainment for its loyal fanbase. Although the world may be gritter, Dead Rising 3 gives a healthy balance between comedy and tragedy. A strong protagonist provides not only the violent debauchery we come to expect in a Dead Rising game but his youth and naivety offer a fresh look at the bleak morality that accompanies a zombie apocalypse. Fans and first-timers, please share your thoughts and experiences about this new direction. Do you like it? Do you feel that it fits in the Dead Rising series? What changes would you have made? What ending did you receive and what was your favorite?
